Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to mix potions safely and understand the basics of chemical reactions.
Materials and Prep
- Clear plastic cups or beakers
- Water
- Food coloring (optional)
- Various household substances (e.g., vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice)
- Stirring sticks or spoons
- Protective eyewear (safety goggles)
- Apron or old clothes
Make sure to review safety precautions with your parent or guardian before starting the activities.
Activities
- Mixing Colors: Fill three cups with water and add a few drops of different food coloring to each cup. Use a stirring stick or spoon to mix the colors together and observe the results.
- Acid-Base Reactions: In one cup, pour vinegar, and in another cup, add baking soda. Mix them together and observe the reaction. Take note of any changes in color, temperature, or fizzing.
- Lemon Juice Magic: Squeeze some lemon juice into a cup and add a small amount of baking soda. Watch as the mixture fizzes and bubbles. Discuss why this happens.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "Chemistry is the study of matter and how substances can change when they mix together."
- "When we mix different colors of food coloring, we can create new colors by combining them."
- "Vinegar is an acid, and baking soda is a base. When we mix them together, they create a chemical reaction called neutralization."
- "The fizzing and bubbling we see when we mix lemon juice and baking soda is due to a chemical reaction called an acid-base reaction."
- "Chemical reactions can produce new substances with different properties than the original substances."
