Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create a feelings-inspired abstract figurative painting using colors.

Materials and Prep

  • Canvas or thick paper
  • Paintbrushes
  • Acrylic paints in various colors
  • Water for cleaning brushes
  • A palette or disposable plate for mixing colors
  • Apron or old clothes to protect your outfit

No prior knowledge or experience is required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Warm-up Exercise
  • Start by doing a warm-up exercise to get your creative juices flowing. Close your eyes and think about different emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, and excitement. Use your brush and colors to paint how each of these emotions might look like on the canvas. Don't worry about making it perfect, just let your feelings guide your brush.

  • Activity 2: Abstract Figurative Painting
  • Now that you've explored different emotions, it's time to create an abstract figurative painting. Think about a person or an object that represents a specific feeling to you. It could be a happy sun, a sad tree, or an angry bird. Use your imagination and paint that figure on the canvas using bold and vibrant colors. Feel free to experiment with different brushstrokes and techniques to express the intensity of the emotion.

  • Activity 3: Color Exploration
  • Colors play a significant role in expressing emotions. Take some time to experiment with different color combinations on a separate piece of paper. Mix primary colors to create secondary colors and see how they make you feel. Once you find a color palette that resonates with the feeling you want to convey, apply it to your abstract figurative painting.

Talking Points

  • Emotions are a powerful source of inspiration for artists. They can help us express and communicate our feelings through art.
  • Abstract art allows us to represent emotions in a more symbolic and non-literal way. It gives us the freedom to explore different shapes, lines, and colors to convey our feelings.
  • Figurative art involves depicting recognizable objects or figures. In this lesson, we will combine abstract and figurative elements to create a unique representation of emotions.
  • Colors have different meanings and can evoke specific emotions. For example, warm colors like red and orange often represent energy and passion, while cool colors like blue and green can evoke calmness and tranquility.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment and make mistakes. Art is all about self-expression, and there are no right or wrong answers. Let your creativity flow and have fun with the process!
