Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to divide decimals by whole numbers.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
Prior knowledge required: Understanding of place value and basic division.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Divide and Conquer
Take out a blank paper and draw a large rectangle. Divide the rectangle into four equal parts. Write the decimal number 2.4 inside the rectangle. Now, divide the rectangle into 4 equal parts vertically, and write the whole number 3 on top of each part. Can you figure out what is the answer when you divide 2.4 by 3?
-
Activity 2: Real-life Division
Think of a real-life scenario where you would need to divide decimals by whole numbers. It could be sharing candies, dividing money, or splitting a pizza. Write down the scenario and solve the division problem using the decimal and whole number of your choice.
-
Activity 3: Decimal Puzzles
Create your own division puzzles using decimals and whole numbers. Write down the puzzles and challenge a family member or friend to solve them. Make sure to provide the correct answers as well.
Talking Points
-
When we divide a decimal by a whole number, we are essentially sharing the decimal into equal parts.
For example, if we have 2.4 and we want to divide it by 3, we are trying to find out how many groups of 3 can fit into 2.4.
-
Remember that when dividing decimals, we need to align the decimal point in the dividend (the number being divided) with the decimal point in the quotient (the answer).
For example, if we have 2.4 ÷ 3, we need to make sure the decimal point in 2.4 lines up with the decimal point in the answer.
-
When dividing decimals by whole numbers, we can ignore the decimal point in the whole number and divide as if it were a regular whole number division.
For example, if we have 2.4 ÷ 3, we can divide 24 (ignoring the decimal point) by 3, which gives us 8.
-
Finally, we need to bring back the decimal point to the quotient. Since we divided 2.4 by 3 and got 8, the decimal point in the quotient should be placed directly above the decimal point in the dividend.
So, 2.4 ÷ 3 = 0.8
