Activities

  • Activity 1: Make pickles - Slice cucumbers and place them in a jar. Add salt, vinegar, and water to the jar. Close the lid tightly and shake it gently. Leave the jar in a cool place for a few days and then enjoy your homemade pickles!
  • Activity 2: Create fruit preserves - Cut your favorite fruits into small pieces. Place them in a pot with sugar and a little water. Cook the mixture on low heat until it thickens. Let it cool and transfer it to a jar. Spread it on toast or use it as a topping for yogurt!
  • Activity 3: Dry fruits and vegetables - Slice fruits or vegetables into thin pieces. Lay them on a baking sheet and put them in the oven on low heat. Leave them in the oven until they are dry and crispy. Store them in an airtight container for a healthy snack!

Talking Points

  • Food preservation helps us keep food fresh for a longer time.
  • Preserving food can be done in different ways, such as pickling, canning, drying, or freezing.
  • Pickling is a process where we soak food in a mixture of salt, vinegar, and water to keep it from spoiling.
  • When making pickles, it is important to close the jar tightly and let it sit in a cool place for a few days to allow the flavors to develop.
  • Preserves are made by cooking fruits with sugar to create a thick and sweet spread.
  • Drying fruits and vegetables removes the water content, which helps prevent spoilage.
  • When drying fruits and vegetables, it's important to cut them into thin slices so they dry evenly and completely.
  • Always store your preserved food in clean and airtight containers to maintain freshness.
