Objective
By the end of this lesson, the 3-year-old homeschool student will be able to understand and explore color mixing through various activities.
Materials and Prep
- Primary colored paints (red, blue, yellow)
- Paintbrushes
- White paper or canvas
- Water cups
- Apron or old clothes
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Primary Color Exploration
Provide the student with the primary colored paints (red, blue, yellow). Let them explore the colors by dipping their paintbrushes into each color and making strokes on the paper. Encourage them to observe the colors and notice any differences between them. - Activity 2: Color Mixing
Show the student how to mix two primary colors together to create secondary colors. For example, mix red and blue to make purple, blue and yellow to make green, and yellow and red to make orange. Allow the student to experiment with mixing the colors themselves. - Activity 3: Colorful Handprints
Help the student dip their hand into different colors of paint and make handprints on the paper or canvas. Encourage them to mix the colors together by overlapping their handprints. This activity will create a beautiful and colorful artwork.
Talking Points
- Colors can be mixed together to make new colors.
"Look at these colors! We have red, blue, and yellow. What do you think will happen if we mix them together?" - Red and blue make purple, blue and yellow make green, and yellow and red make orange.
"Wow! When we mix red and blue together, it makes a beautiful purple color. Can you see that? Let's try mixing blue and yellow now!" - We can use our hands to make colorful prints.
"Let's dip our hands into the paint and make handprints on the paper. Look at all the colors mixing together! It's so much fun!"
