Objective
The objective of this lesson is to introduce the 1 year old homeschool student to bilingual beginning reading. By the end of the lesson, the student should be able to recognize and identify basic words in both English and the target language.
Materials and Prep
- Flashcards with basic words in English and the target language
- A cozy reading corner with cushions or a small rug
- Soft toys or puppets for storytelling
- Printed picture books in both English and the target language
- A whiteboard or large paper and markers
Activities
- Flashcard Fun: Show the student the flashcards one by one, saying the word out loud in both English and the target language. Encourage the student to repeat after you.
- Storytime: Choose a simple picture book in the target language and read it aloud to the student, pointing at the pictures and emphasizing key words. Use gestures and facial expressions to make the story engaging.
- Word Hunt: Write a few basic words on the whiteboard or large paper. Ask the student to find and touch the corresponding flashcard or picture in the room. Repeat this activity with different words.
- Song and Dance: Teach the student a simple bilingual song related to the lesson topic. Sing and dance together, using hand movements to reinforce the meaning of the words.
