Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to demonstrate basic swimming skills and water safety knowledge.

Materials and Prep

  • Swimming pool or suitable body of water
  • Towel
  • Swimsuit
  • Sunscreen
  • Waterproof watch or timer
  • Adult supervision

Activities

  1. Warm-up exercises: Start by stretching your muscles to prepare for swimming. Reach your arms up high, touch your toes, and twist your body gently from side to side.

  2. Water safety rules: Review and discuss important water safety rules with your adult supervisor. Remember to always swim with a buddy, listen to lifeguards or adults in charge, and never run near the pool.

  3. Blowing bubbles: Practice blowing bubbles in the water through your mouth and nose. This will help you become comfortable with having your face in the water.

  4. Kicking practice: Hold onto the pool edge or use a kickboard for support. Kick your legs up and down in the water, keeping your toes pointed. Try to make big splashes!

  5. Arm movements: Stand in the shallow end of the pool and practice moving your arms in a freestyle stroke. Pretend you are swimming through the water and reach forward with one arm at a time.

  6. Floatation practice: With the help of your adult supervisor, practice floating on your back. Relax your body and let the water support you. This is an important skill for water safety.

  7. Water games: End the lesson with some fun water games like diving for toys or playing Marco Polo. Remember to always follow the water safety rules!
