Objective
By the end of this lesson, Elisabeth will be able to identify and create patterns and shapes in the natural environment.
Materials and Prep
- No materials needed, just a curious mind!
- Before the lesson, think about shapes and patterns you might see outside.
Activities
- Nature Scavenger Hunt: Go outside and find objects that represent different shapes. Can you find a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle?
- Pattern Walk: Take a walk and look for patterns in nature. You might see stripes on a flower petal or the repeating shapes of tree leaves.
- Leaf Rubbing: Collect different leaves and do leaf rubbings to see the shapes and patterns on the leaves.
Talking Points
- "Look at this flower, see how the petals form a circle. Circles are round like a ball!"
- "Do you see how these stripes on the caterpillar make a pattern? Patterns repeat over and over."
- "When we put one triangle on top of another triangle, we can make a star shape. Stars have five points like this!"
- "Let's trace the outline of this leaf. What shape does it look like to you? It's like a pointy oval, right?"
