Objective
By the end of this lesson, Audrey will improve her independent reading skills, including accuracy, automaticity, rate, and prosody, to better suit the purpose, audience, and meaning of the text.
Materials and Prep
- Favorite book or reading material
- Timer
- Paper and pencil
- Quiet reading space
No prior knowledge needed, just a positive attitude towards reading!
Activities
- Reading Challenge: Set a timer for 10 minutes and see how many pages Audrey can read accurately. Encourage her to focus on reading fluently.
- Character Voices: Have Audrey read a short passage from her book using different voices for each character. This can help with expression and prosody.
- Reading Reflection: After reading a chapter, ask Audrey to write a short summary or draw a picture of her favorite part. This will help her understand the meaning of the text.
Talking Points
- Accuracy: "When we read accurately, we make sure to say each word correctly. Let's try to read slowly and pay attention to each word."
- Automaticity: "Automaticity means reading smoothly without stopping. Let's practice reading fluently like a storyteller."
- Rate: "Reading rate is how fast or slow we read. Let's try to find a pace that is comfortable for us and matches the story."
- Prosody: "Prosody is like adding emotion and expression to our reading. Let's try to read with feeling, like we're acting out the story."
