Objective
By the end of this lesson, Matilda will learn the basics of riding a bike, including how to balance, pedal, and steer. She will gain confidence in her ability to ride and enjoy the fun of cycling.
Materials and Prep
- A bike that fits Matilda properly.
- A helmet to ensure safety while riding.
- Comfortable clothing and shoes for riding.
- A clear, flat, and safe area to practice riding.
Before the lesson, check that the bike is in good working condition. Make sure Matilda knows how to put on her helmet correctly. Choose a location free from obstacles and traffic.
Activities
-
Bike Familiarization: Start by letting Matilda explore the bike. She can sit on it, hold the handlebars, and practice using the brakes. This will help her feel comfortable with the bike.
-
Balancing Practice: Find a gentle slope or a flat surface. Have Matilda practice balancing by walking alongside the bike and then sitting on it while someone holds the back of the seat. This will help her get used to the feeling of balancing.
-
Pushing Off and Pedaling: Once she feels balanced, encourage Matilda to push off with one foot and start pedaling. You can help her by holding the bike steady as she begins to ride.
-
Steering and Turning: After she gets comfortable pedaling, practice steering. Set up cones or markers (or simply use imaginary lines) for her to ride around. This will help her learn how to turn the bike.
-
Fun Riding Games: End the lesson with a fun game like “Follow the Leader” where Matilda can practice her skills by following you or another family member on their bike.
Talking Points
- "Remember, it's okay to feel a little wobbly at first! That's how we learn to balance."
- "Always keep your eyes looking ahead, not down at the ground. This helps you steer better!"
- "If you start to fall, try to put your foot down to catch yourself."
- "Pedaling is like a dance! Keep your feet moving in a circle."
- "Turning is all about leaning your body a little in the direction you want to go."
- "The more you practice, the better you will get! Just have fun!"
- "Remember to always wear your helmet. It keeps your head safe!"
