Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and summarize a short story, identify the main characters, and discuss the story's key events. This will help improve their reading comprehension skills and make reading more enjoyable!
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or crayons
- A short story (can be created by the teacher or read aloud)
- Timer (optional, for timed activities)
Before the lesson, prepare a short story that is age-appropriate and engaging for the student. Make sure you understand the main characters and events in the story so you can guide the discussion effectively.
Activities
-
Story Time:
Read a short story together. As you read, encourage the student to listen carefully and think about what is happening in the story.
-
Character Drawing:
After reading, ask the student to draw their favorite character from the story. They can also write a few sentences about what makes that character special.
-
Story Summary:
Have the student summarize the story in their own words. You can prompt them with questions like, "What happened first?" or "How did the story end?"
-
Character Interview:
Role-play as the characters from the story. The student can ask questions to the character you are playing, and you can answer as that character. This helps them think deeply about the character's feelings and actions.
