Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have explored various genres of books, developed a personal reading list, and engaged in discussions about their favorite stories, enhancing their independent reading skills and fostering a love for literature.
Materials and Prep
- A comfortable reading space
- Notebook or journal for writing reflections
- Pens or pencils
- A selection of books from different genres (fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, mystery, etc.)
- Timer (optional, for reading sessions)
Before the lesson, ensure that the reading space is inviting and that a variety of books are accessible for the student to explore different genres.
Activities

Genre Exploration:
The student will pick 3 different genres of books and spend 10 minutes with each. They can read the first chapter or a few pages, then write down their thoughts about each genre in their notebook.

Personal Reading List:
After exploring the genres, the student will create a personal reading list of at least 5 books they want to read. They should include the title, author, and a brief reason why they chose each book.

Book Discussion:
The student will pick one book from their reading list and prepare a short summary to share. They can discuss the characters, setting, and plot, and explain why they are excited to read it.

Reading Time:
The student will spend 20-30 minutes reading one of the books from their personal reading list. They can set a timer and enjoy uninterrupted reading time, reflecting on their thoughts afterward.
