Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have explored various genres of books, developed a personal reading list, and engaged in discussions about their favorite stories, enhancing their independent reading skills and fostering a love for literature.

Materials and Prep

  • A comfortable reading space
  • Notebook or journal for writing reflections
  • Pens or pencils
  • A selection of books from different genres (fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, mystery, etc.)
  • Timer (optional, for reading sessions)

Before the lesson, ensure that the reading space is inviting and that a variety of books are accessible for the student to explore different genres.

Activities

  • Genre Exploration:

The student will pick 3 different genres of books and spend 10 minutes with each. They can read the first chapter or a few pages, then write down their thoughts about each genre in their notebook.

  • Personal Reading List:

After exploring the genres, the student will create a personal reading list of at least 5 books they want to read. They should include the title, author, and a brief reason why they chose each book.

  • Book Discussion:

The student will pick one book from their reading list and prepare a short summary to share. They can discuss the characters, setting, and plot, and explain why they are excited to read it.

  • Reading Time:

The student will spend 20-30 minutes reading one of the books from their personal reading list. They can set a timer and enjoy uninterrupted reading time, reflecting on their thoughts afterward.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a book interesting? Is it the characters, the plot, or something else?"
  • "Why do you think it's important to read different genres? How can it help you as a reader?"
  • "Can you tell me about a book that you really enjoyed? What made it special for you?"
  • "How does reading independently help you learn more about the world?"
  • "What do you think you’ll discover about yourself through your reading choices?"
  • "How can we make reading a fun and enjoyable part of our daily routine?"
