Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of the themes, characters, and moral dilemmas presented in "After Twenty Years." They will also enhance their critical thinking and analytical skills through discussions and creative activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Copy of "After Twenty Years" from Oxford Reading Circle, Second Edition
  • Notebook and pen/pencil for notes and creative writing
  • Whiteboard or large paper for brainstorming ideas
  • Timer for activities
  • Access to a comfortable reading space

Before the lesson, ensure the student has read "After Twenty Years" and is familiar with its plot and main characters. Prepare discussion questions and activities in advance.

Activities

  • Character Analysis: Have the student choose one character from the story and create a character profile. They can include traits, motivations, and how the character changes throughout the story.
  • Theme Exploration: Ask the student to identify the main themes in "After Twenty Years." They can create a mind map that visually represents these themes and how they are illustrated in the text.
  • Creative Rewrite: Challenge the student to rewrite the ending of the story from the perspective of one of the characters. This will help them think critically about character motivations and outcomes.
  • Role Play: Set up a role-play scenario where the student acts as one of the characters meeting the other after twenty years. They can improvise a conversation based on their understanding of the characters' personalities and backgrounds.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think the author is trying to say about friendship and loyalty in the story?"
  • "How do the characters' choices reflect their values and priorities after twenty years?"
  • "Can you relate to any of the characters? Why or why not?"
  • "What do you think the setting adds to the story? How does it affect the characters' reunion?"
  • "How does the ending make you feel? What emotions does it evoke?"
  • "If you were in the same situation, how would you react? What would you do differently?"
  • "What lessons can we learn from the characters' experiences in 'After Twenty Years'?"
