Objective
By the end of this lesson, Anleigh will be able to recognize and read simple words and sentences, enhancing her confidence and interest in reading.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Storybook (any favorite story)
- Blank flashcards (can be made from cut-up paper)
Before the lesson, make sure to choose a favorite storybook that Anleigh enjoys. Prepare some blank flashcards for the word games.
Activities
-
Story Time: Start by reading a favorite storybook together. Encourage Anleigh to point out pictures and guess what might happen next in the story. This will help her connect words with images.
-
Word Hunt: After reading, pick out simple words from the story. Write them on flashcards and hide them around the room. Anleigh will go on a "word hunt" to find them and read them aloud when she finds each card.
-
Draw and Write: Ask Anleigh to draw her favorite scene from the story and write a simple sentence about it. For example, "I see a cat." This activity combines creativity with writing practice.
-
Rhyming Game: Create a fun rhyming game using simple words. Say a word and ask Anleigh to come up with a word that rhymes with it. For example, "cat" and "hat." This will help her with phonemic awareness.

- "Let’s look for words together! How many can we find?"
- "Can you think of another word that sounds like 'hat'?"
