Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and read simple words and sentences, enhancing their reading skills and building confidence in their ability to read independently.
Materials and Prep
- Blank sheets of paper
- Colored crayons or markers
- A comfortable reading space
- Familiar storybooks (if available)
Before the lesson, think of some simple words that the student is already familiar with, like "cat," "dog," and "sun." This will make it easier for them to connect with the activities.
Activities
-
Word Art:
Have the student choose their favorite words (like "cat" or "sun") and write them in big letters on a blank sheet of paper. Then, they can color and decorate the words with crayons or markers. This will help them recognize the words visually and make it fun!
-
Story Time:
Read a short story together. After reading, ask the student to point out any words they recognized. Encourage them to read a sentence or two aloud to build their confidence.
-
Word Hunt:
Go on a word hunt around the house! Look for simple words on labels, books, or even toys. When you find a word, say it together and discuss what it means.
Talking Points
- "What sound does the first letter of this word make?"
- "Can you find another word that starts with the same sound?"
- "How many letters are in this word? Let's count them together!"
- "What do you think this word means? Let's use it in a sentence!"
- "Can you say this word really loud? Now, can you whisper it?"
