Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and apply various reading strategies that enhance comprehension and retention of information. The student will also practice these strategies through engaging activities that make reading more enjoyable.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen or pencil
  • Access to a book or short story (can be chosen by the student)
  • Timer (optional, can use a phone or clock)
  • Space to read comfortably

Before the lesson, ensure the student has a book or short story ready to read. Discuss with them any preferences they have for reading material, as this will help keep them engaged.

Activities

  • Preview and Predict: Before reading, the student will look at the cover, title, and any illustrations. They will make predictions about the story. This activity encourages critical thinking and sets a purpose for reading.
  • Think-Alouds: As the student reads, they will verbalize their thoughts, questions, and connections. This helps them practice self-monitoring and enhances comprehension by making their thinking visible.
  • Summarize the Story: After reading, the student will write a brief summary of what they read. This reinforces understanding and retention of key ideas and details.
  • Visual Mapping: The student will create a mind map or visual representation of the main ideas, characters, and events in the story. This helps in organizing thoughts and visualizing connections.
