Objective
By the end of this lesson, Aj will be able to understand and describe spatial relations such as "above," "below," "next to," and "in front of." Aj will also be able to identify these relationships in different objects around the home.
Materials and Prep
- No specific materials needed for this lesson.
- Prepare a few objects around the house that Aj can use, like toys, books, or furniture.
- Be ready to explore and have fun with spatial words together!
Activities
-
Object Hunt: Ask Aj to find different objects around the house and describe where they are. For example, "Can you find something that is above the table?" This will help Aj understand the concept of "above" and other spatial relations.
-
Shadow Play: Use your body to create shadows on the wall. Aj can stand in front of you and you can say, "I am behind you!" This will help Aj visualize the concepts of "in front of" and "behind."
-
Obstacle Course: Create a simple obstacle course using furniture. Aj can crawl under the table (under), jump over a pillow (over), or walk next to the chair (next to). This physical activity will reinforce spatial concepts through movement.
-
Story Time with Spatial Words: Read a short story together and pause to point out spatial relations in the illustrations. Ask Aj questions like, "Where is the cat? Is it in front of or behind the tree?"
Talking Points
- "Look around the room! Can you tell me what is above the shelf?"
- "If I stand in front of you, where am I? That's right, I am in front of you!"
- "Can you find something that is next to the couch? Great job!"
- "When you crawl under the table, you are going under it. Can you show me?"
- "In our story, where is the dog? Is it behind the fence or next to the house?"
