Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and read basic sight words, recognize simple sentence structures, and demonstrate comprehension through engaging activities.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or crayon
- Storybook or picture book (appropriate for Reading level A)
- Flashcards with sight words (can be homemade)
Before the lesson, prepare flashcards with common sight words like "the," "cat," "dog," "is," and "see." Choose a fun storybook that contains these words for reading together.
Activities
-
Sight Word Flashcard Game:
Use the flashcards to play a matching game. Lay the cards face down and take turns flipping two at a time to find matching pairs. Each time a match is found, say the word aloud.
-
Storytime Together:
Read the selected storybook together. Encourage the student to point out sight words they recognize as you read. Ask them to predict what might happen next in the story.
-
Draw and Write:
After reading, have the student draw their favorite part of the story. Then, help them write a simple sentence about their drawing using sight words. For example, “I see a cat.”
-
Sight Word Scavenger Hunt:
Create a scavenger hunt by hiding the sight word flashcards around the house. The student will find each card and read the word aloud when they discover it.
Talking Points
- "Sight words are words we see often in books. Knowing them helps us read faster!"
- "Can you find the word 'cat' in this book? Let's look together!"
- "What do you think will happen next in the story? Let's make a guess!"
- "Drawing helps us remember the story better. What was your favorite part?"
- "Great job on the scavenger hunt! How many words did you find?"
