Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will learn about primary and secondary colors through fun color mixing activities while creating their own unique pirate flag. This will enhance their understanding of colors and boost their confidence in artistic expression.
Materials and Prep
- White paper (for pirate flags)
- Red, blue, and yellow paint (primary colors)
- Brushes (or fingers for finger painting!)
- Water container (for rinsing brushes)
- Paper towels (for cleaning up)
Before starting the lesson, make sure to set up a comfortable and creative workspace where the student can freely express themselves without distractions.
Activities
-
Color Mixing Fun:
Start by exploring the primary colors. Have the student mix red and yellow to create orange, blue and yellow to create green, and red and blue to create purple. Encourage them to paint small swatches of each color on a separate piece of paper.
-
Create Your Pirate Flag:
Using the mixed colors, let the student design their own pirate flag. They can paint symbols like skulls, treasure chests, or waves, using their imagination to create a unique flag that represents them!
-
Show and Tell:
Once the flags are complete, have a mini art show where the student can share their flag with you. Ask them to explain the colors they used and what their design means to them.
