Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have engaged with a fun reading activity that encourages them to explore their interests, improves their reading skills, and boosts their confidence in reading.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or colored markers
- Access to a comfortable reading space
- A timer (optional)
Before starting the lesson, consider the student's interests (like animals, superheroes, or fantasy) to tailor the reading material and activities to their preferences.
Activities
-
Story Creation:
Ask the student to create a short story based on their favorite character or theme. They can write or draw their story on paper. Encourage them to use their imagination and be as creative as they want.
-
Reading Relay:
Choose a short passage from a book or a story that interests the student. Set a timer for 5 minutes and have them read aloud. After the time is up, discuss what they read and ask them to summarize it in their own words.
-
Character Interview:
After reading a story or passage, have the student choose a character and create a list of interview questions. They can then role-play as the character and answer the questions, enhancing their understanding of character development.
-
Illustrate Your Favorite Scene:
After reading, have the student pick their favorite scene from the story and illustrate it. They can use colored markers to make it vibrant and then share their artwork with you, explaining why they chose that scene.
