Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a comprehensive understanding of weather concepts, including the weather cycle, types of clouds, how to track and record weather patterns, and safety measures during hurricanes. The student will also become familiar with various weather measuring instruments.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or journal for recording observations
  • Pencil or pen
  • Access to a weather website or app for tracking weather patterns
  • Printed images of different types of clouds
  • Simple homemade weather instruments (e.g., a rain gauge made from a plastic bottle)
  • Safety guidelines for hurricanes (printed or written out)

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the student understands basic weather terminology and has access to a reliable weather source online or via an app.

Activities

  • Weather Journal: The student will create a weather journal to record daily weather observations for one week. They will note temperature, cloud types, and any precipitation.
  • Cloud Identification: Using printed images of different cloud types (cumulus, stratus, cirrus, etc.), the student will go outside and identify clouds in the sky, matching them to the images.
  • Weather Tracking Chart: The student will create a chart to track weather patterns over the week, noting changes and discussing possible reasons for those changes.
  • Hurricane Safety Plan: The student will learn about hurricane safety and create a personal safety plan, including what to do before, during, and after a hurricane.
  • DIY Weather Instruments: The student will make simple weather instruments, such as a rain gauge and a wind vane, using household items, and use them to measure weather conditions.

Talking Points

  • "The weather cycle consists of processes like evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. Can you explain how these processes work together?"
  • "There are many types of clouds, such as cumulus, stratus, and cirrus. What do you think each type of cloud indicates about the weather?"
  • "Tracking weather patterns helps us predict changes in the weather. Why do you think this is important?"
  • "Recording weather daily can reveal trends. How can you use the data you collect to make predictions?"
  • "In a hurricane, it’s important to have a safety plan. What steps should you include in your safety plan?"
  • "Weather measuring instruments like thermometers and barometers help us understand our environment. How do you think they work?"
