Objective
By the end of this lesson, Katelyn will learn basic swimming skills, including floating, kicking, and simple arm movements, while having fun and building confidence in the water.
Materials and Prep
- Swimwear
- Towel
- Water source (pool, lake, or safe swimming area)
Before the lesson, ensure the swimming area is safe, shallow, and supervised. Make sure Katelyn is comfortable in the water and explain the importance of safety while swimming.
Activities
-
Water Introduction
Start by letting Katelyn walk around in the shallow water to get used to the feeling. Encourage her to splash and play, making it a fun experience while getting comfortable.
-
Floating Fun
Help Katelyn practice floating on her back. Use a gentle support technique by holding her back while she relaxes. Encourage her to take deep breaths and feel the water support her body.
-
Kick Like a Frog
Show Katelyn how to kick her legs while holding onto the pool edge. Make it a game by pretending to be frogs jumping in the water, emphasizing strong kicks and splashes!
-
Arm Movements
Teach Katelyn simple arm movements by pretending to be different animals. For example, she can mimic a dog paddling or a butterfly flapping its wings. This will help her learn how to move her arms in the water.
Talking Points
- "Swimming is like flying in the water! We can float and move around just like a bird!"
- "When we float, we can relax and let the water hold us up. It’s like being on a cozy cloud!"
- "Kicking our legs helps us move forward in the water! Can you kick like a frog? Let’s see who can make the biggest splash!"
- "Our arms help us swim! Let’s pretend we are different animals and see how they move in the water!"
- "Always remember, it’s fun to swim, but we need to be safe! We should always have a grown-up with us!"
- "The more we practice, the better we get! Let’s have fun and keep trying together!"
