Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to count from 1 to 20, understand how to count backwards, and identify missing numbers in a sequence. This will help them develop a strong foundation in number recognition and basic counting skills.
Materials and Prep
- No special materials are needed for this lesson.
- Make sure the student is comfortable with numbers up to 20.
- Prepare to engage the student with fun and interactive counting activities.
Activities
-
Counting Song: Start the lesson by singing a fun counting song together. Choose a song that counts to 20, and encourage the student to sing along, clapping their hands or tapping their feet to the rhythm.
-
Number Walk: Go on a "number walk" around the house or yard. Point out objects and count them together, like steps, toys, or plants. For example, say, "Let's count the steps together! 1, 2, 3..." and continue until you reach 20.
-
Missing Number Game: Create a simple game where you say a sequence of numbers and leave one out. For example, say "1, 2, __, 4, 5" and ask the student to fill in the missing number. Encourage them to think and respond!
-
Backward Counting Challenge: Challenge the student to count backwards from 20 to 1. You can make it fun by pretending to be a rocket ship counting down for takeoff! "10, 9, 8... Blast off!"
Talking Points
- "Counting is like a fun game! Can you count to 20 with me?"
- "Look at all the things around us! How many do you see? Let's count them together!"
- "If I say '1, 2, __, 4', what number is missing? Let's figure it out!"
- "When we count backwards, it’s like going down a slide! Ready? 5, 4, 3... Whee!"
- "Great job today! Counting is so much fun. Can you think of other things we can count?"
