Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have explored different types of stories, practiced reading comprehension, and expressed their thoughts creatively through writing and drawing. They will also develop a deeper appreciation for reading as a fun and imaginative activity.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper for writing and drawing
- A comfortable reading space
- Access to a book or story (can be any favorite book or a new one)
- A timer (optional, for timed activities)
Before the lesson, ensure that the student has a book or story they enjoy or are curious about. It can be a chapter book, a picture book, or even a comic book!
Activities
-
Story Exploration:
The student will choose a book and read for 15-20 minutes. After reading, they will share their favorite part of the story and explain why they liked it.
-
Character Creation:
After reading, the student will create their own character inspired by the book. They will draw the character and write a short description of who they are and what they like to do.
-
Storytelling Circle:
The student will tell a short story (real or imaginary) to a family member or friend. They should include at least one character and one exciting event. This can be done in a fun storytelling manner!
-
Book Review:
The student will write a short book review (3-5 sentences) about the book they read. They can include what they liked, what they didn’t like, and who they would recommend it to.
Talking Points
- "What do you think makes a story interesting? Is it the characters, the setting, or the events?"
- "Can you tell me about a time when you imagined a different ending for a story? How would it change the story?"
- "Why do you think it's important to create our own characters? What can they teach us?"
- "How do you feel when you read a story? Does it make you happy, excited, or maybe even a little scared?"
- "What would you say to someone who thinks reading is boring? How can we show them that it's fun?"
