Objective

By the end of this lesson, Brodi will be able to confidently read and interpret maps, atlases, and street directories. He will understand key concepts such as scale, symbols, and directions, enabling him to navigate various environments effectively.

Materials and Prep

  • Printed maps of local areas
  • An atlas (if available)
  • Street directory (if available)
  • A compass (if available)
  • A notebook and pen for notes

Before the lesson, ensure that Brodi is familiar with basic compass directions (North, South, East, West) and has a general understanding of what maps are used for.

Activities

  • Map Scavenger Hunt

Brodi will be given a printed map and a list of landmarks or locations to find. He will use the map to locate each item, practicing his skills in reading the map's symbols and scale.

  • Creating a Personal Map

Brodi will draw a simple map of his neighborhood or a favorite park, marking important locations such as his home, friends' houses, and parks. This activity will help him apply what he's learned about symbols and scale.

  • Compass Navigation

If a compass is available, Brodi will practice using it to follow directions to a set of predetermined locations. This will reinforce his understanding of directions and how they relate to maps.

  • Map Quiz

A fun quiz will test Brodi's knowledge of map symbols, scales, and navigation. This can include matching symbols to their meanings or answering questions about how to find specific locations using a map.
