Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand how different musical instruments create sound and will be able to make their own simple instruments using the DY music discovery kit. They will learn about sound waves, vibrations, and how different materials affect the sound produced.
Materials and Prep
- DY music discovery kit (includes various materials for making instruments)
- Access to a quiet space for experimenting with sound
- Paper and pencil for notes and drawings
Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the contents of the DY music discovery kit and think about some simple instruments you can create, such as a drum, a string instrument, or a wind instrument.
Activities
-
Make a Drum:
Using materials from the DY music discovery kit, the student will create a simple drum. They will explore how different sizes and materials of the drum can change the sound it makes.
-
Create a String Instrument:
The student will assemble a basic string instrument using the materials provided. They will learn about tension and how it affects pitch by adjusting the strings.
-
Build a Wind Instrument:
Using the kit, the student will create a simple wind instrument. They will discover how air flow and the shape of the instrument can influence sound.
-
Sound Experimentation:
The student will experiment with their instruments, trying to create different sounds. They will take notes on what works best and why they think it happens.
Talking Points
- "Did you know that sound is made by vibrations? When you hit a drum, it vibrates and makes noise!"
- "Different materials can change the sound. For example, a wooden drum sounds different from a metal drum!"
- "When you stretch a string tight, it makes a higher sound. If you loosen it, it sounds lower. Isn't that cool?"
- "What happens when you blow into a tube? The air makes the tube vibrate and creates music!"
- "Let's think about why your drum sounds different from your string instrument. What do you notice?"
- "Every instrument has its own special sound. What kind of sound do you like the best?"
- "Remember, experimenting is part of learning! Let's try different things and see what happens!"
