Objective
By the end of this lesson, Darby will enhance her reading comprehension skills, develop a deeper appreciation for storytelling, and learn to express her thoughts about the text through creative activities.
Materials and Prep
- A comfortable reading space
- A selection of age-appropriate books (fiction and non-fiction)
- Paper and colored pencils or crayons
- A timer (optional, for timed reading activities)
- Knowledge of Darby's reading level and interests to select appropriate books
Activities
-
Story Time:
Begin by reading a selected book together. Choose a story that sparks Darby's interest. Take turns reading pages or paragraphs to make it interactive.
-
Character Drawing:
After the story, encourage Darby to draw her favorite character from the book. Ask her to think about what the character looks like and what makes them unique.
-
Book Review:
Have Darby write a short review of the book. She can include her favorite part, what she learned, and whether she would recommend it to a friend.
-
Story Extension:
Encourage Darby to create a new ending for the story or to write a short sequel. This will help her think critically about the plot and characters.
-
Reading Relay:
Set a timer for 10 minutes and see how many pages Darby can read in that time. This can be a fun way to encourage her to read more quickly while still comprehending the material.
