Sandy Adventures with Matilda!

Let's get ready for some super fun learning with sand!

Materials You'll Need:

  • A tray, bin, or small sandbox
  • Play sand or kinetic sand
  • Measuring cups and spoons of different sizes
  • Small toys (like little animals, cars, or blocks)
  • A stick or your amazing fingers for drawing!
  • A small cup of water (optional, for exploring wet sand)
  • Sifters or small strainers (optional)

Activity 1: Super Sand Scientist!

Let's explore, Matilda! Pour some sand into the tray. How does it feel? Is it smooth, scratchy, soft? Run your fingers through it. Now, slowly add a tiny bit of water (ask a grown-up first!). How does the sand change? Can you squish it together now? Try picking up dry sand and then wet sand. What's different? If you have a sifter, what happens when you pour dry sand through it? What about wet sand?

Activity 2: Measurement Magic!

Grab your measuring cups and spoons. Let's see how many little spoonfuls of sand it takes to fill up the smallest cup. Now, how many small cups does it take to fill the biggest cup? Can you make a tall pile and a short pile? Which pile uses more sand? Pour sand from one cup to another. It's like magic!

Activity 3: Sandy Scribbles!

Smooth out a patch of sand. Let's use your finger or a stick like a pencil! Can you draw a big circle? A square? What about a smiley face? Let's practice writing your name: M-A-T-I-L-D-A! Can you write some numbers? How about 1, 2, 3? If you make a mistake, just gently shake the tray to erase it – easy peasy!

Activity 4: Build Your World!

Time to build! Can you make a tall sandcastle? Or maybe a long road for your toy cars? You can use the wet sand to help things stick together. Try burying some of your small toys and then going on a treasure hunt to find them again! Pat the sand down flat, or build tall mountains.

Activity 5: Sand Stories!

Let's use your little toys in the sand. Can you make a little home for the animals? Maybe the cars are driving to a sand mountain park? Tell a story about what's happening in your sandy world. Where are the animals going? What are the cars doing? You are the storyteller!

Great job exploring and learning with sand today, Matilda! Remember to help clean up afterward.
