Success Criteria
Students will know they have succeeded when they can find and explain the sugar content of any household snack and correctly name the first ingredient (the main ingredient) on its label.
Materials Needed
- The book Reading What You Eat by Valorie Fisher (If unavailable, a printable/digital image of a basic nutrition label works perfectly).
- 2-3 clean, empty food packages from home/classroom pantry (e.g., a cereal box, a chip bag, a can of beans, a fruit snack pouch).
- 1 piece of fresh fruit or a vegetable (like an apple, banana, or carrot) for comparison.
- "My Superfood Creation" worksheet (or a blank sheet of drawing paper).
- Colored pencils, crayons, or markers.
- A small kitchen spoon and a small bowl of real sugar (optional, for visual demonstration).
1. Introduction: The Secret Code on Your Plate (10 Minutes)
Teacher/Parent Script (The Hook): "Imagine you are a detective, and you've just been handed a secret, locked box. Inside this box is fuel that will give you energy to run, jump, think, and play. But wait! How do you know if this fuel is premium, super-powered rocket fuel, or just sticky, slow mud?
You don't need a magnifying glass to find out. Every box, bag, and can of food has a secret code printed right on the back. It’s called the Nutrition Facts label! Today, we are going to become Food Detectives. We will learn how to crack this code so we know exactly what we are putting into our bodies!"
Active Engagement:
- Show the student a fresh piece of fruit (like an apple) and a packaged snack (like a fruit snack pouch).
- Ask: "Where is the label on this apple? Why doesn't the apple have a nutrition label stuck to it, but the package does?"
- Briefly discuss: Whole foods (like apples) are single ingredients. Packaged foods are mixtures of many things, so they need a map to tell us what is inside!
2. Body: The Food Detective Training (25 Minutes)
Part A: "I Do" - Cracking the Label Code
Open the book Reading What You Eat by Valorie Fisher to the pages showing the Nutrition Facts label. Point out the three major clues every detective needs to search for:
- Clue #1: The Serving Size.
This tells us how much of the food we are talking about. If a bag of chips says 'Serving Size: 10 chips,' but we eat 30 chips, we have eaten 3 servings! - Clue #2: The Sugar Monster.
Show the student the "Total Sugars" line. Explain that 4 grams of sugar equals about 1 actual teaspoon of sugar.
Interactive Demo: If a snack has 12 grams of sugar, measure out 3 teaspoons of real sugar into a bowl so the student can physically see how much sugar is hidden in that small treat! - Clue #3: The Ingredients List.
The ingredients are listed in order of weight, from heaviest to lightest. The very first ingredient listed is the star of the show—there is more of that ingredient in the food than anything else! If sugar is the first ingredient, that food is mostly sugar.
Part B: "We Do" - Label Showdown!
Now, work together with the student to compare two real packages from your pantry (for example, a box of oatmeal versus a box of sugary cereal, or potato chips versus canned peas).

Guided Discussion: "Look at the ingredient list for Food #2. Can you pronounce all of those words, or do some sound like they belong in a science laboratory? If there are 30 ingredients and we can't pronounce half of them, that means this food is highly processed!"
Part C: "You Do" - Invent a Superfood & Label!
Now, the student gets to use their imagination to create and package their own imaginary, super-healthy snack!
Mission: The Superfood Invention
Grab a blank piece of paper and design the front and back packaging for a brand-new healthy food product. Follow these steps:
- Draw the Front: Give your food a fun, creative name (e.g., "Galaxy Green Crunchies" or "Volcano Power Berries"). Draw colorful, exciting packaging.
- Draw the Back Label: Draw a simplified "Nutrition Facts" box containing:
- Serving Size: (e.g., "1 Handful" or "5 Rocket Spheres")
- Sugar: Keep it low! (e.g., "2 grams")
- Ingredients List: Write down 3 to 5 wholesome, healthy ingredients that make up your superfood (e.g., "Dried strawberries, organic honey, oats, dinosaur magic"). Make sure the healthiest, heaviest ingredient is listed first!
3. Conclusion: Wrap-Up & Show-and-Tell (10 Minutes)
Recap: Have the student act like a product marketer and pitch their new Superfood to you!
Quick Review Questions (Formative Assessment):
- "If you look at a box of cookies and sugar is the very first ingredient listed, what does that tell you?" *(Answer: Sugar is the main ingredient in the cookie).*
- "If you eat two servings of a snack, and each serving has 5 grams of sugar, how many grams of sugar did you eat in total?" *(Answer: 10 grams of sugar).*
- "What is the difference between a whole food and a processed food?" *(Answer: Whole foods have only one ingredient and grow in nature; processed foods have many ingredients and are made in factories).*
Assessment Methods
Formative Assessment (During the Lesson): Observe the student during the "We Do" label showdown. Can they easily point to the "Ingredients" and "Sugar" lines on the physical package? Do they understand how serving sizes work?
Summative Assessment (End of Lesson): Evaluate the student’s completed "Superfood Creation" project. Check if the food label is filled out logically, if the first ingredient listed matches the primary purpose of the food, and if they kept the sugar content reasonably healthy.
Differentiation Strategies (Adapting the Lesson)
Instead of focusing on all aspects of the nutrition label, focus exclusively on the Ingredients List. Play a "Hide and Seek" game where the student simply searches real boxes to spot and highlight the word "Sugar" (or syrup) in the ingredients list.
Introduce the concept of "Sneaky Sugar Names." Explain that food companies sometimes use different words for sugar (like high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, dextrose, or barley malt) so they don't have to write the word "sugar." Have the student look up these words and audit a highly-processed pantry package to find "hidden" sugars.
