Plant Power: Designing a Mini Ecosystem

Materials Needed

  • Clear plastic cup, jar, or recycled container
  • Small rocks or pebbles
  • Potting soil
  • Small plant, moss, grass seed, or bean seeds
  • Water and a spoon
  • Paper and pencil or a digital notebook
  • Optional: ruler, magnifying glass, labels, colored pencils, and recycled decorations

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify at least four things plants need to grow.
  • Explain how living and nonliving parts work together in an ecosystem.
  • Build a simple mini ecosystem using safe, everyday materials.
  • Record observations using accurate words, drawings, measurements, or photographs.
  • Make a prediction and support it with evidence from observations.

Success Criteria

Successful work will include:

  • A mini ecosystem containing soil, a plant or seed, water, air, and light.
  • A labeled diagram identifying living and nonliving parts.
  • At least three dated observations.
  • A clear explanation of how the parts of the ecosystem help one another.
  • A conclusion that uses evidence, such as changes in height, color, moisture, or new growth.

Introduction: Hook and Objectives

Hook: “Could a Plant Survive in a Jar?”

Show the learner the empty container and ask:

“If we placed a tiny plant inside this container, what would it need to stay alive? Could it survive for a week?”

Invite the learner to make a quick prediction. They may write, draw, or explain their answer aloud.

An ecosystem is a community of living things and the nonliving things around them. An ecosystem can be very large, such as a forest, or very small, such as a puddle or a garden container.

Most plants need:

  1. Light
  2. Water
  3. Air
  4. Space
  5. Nutrients from soil
  6. A suitable temperature

Body: Learning and Practice

Part 1: I Do — Teacher or Adult Modeling

Explain and demonstrate the following:

  1. Choose a container.

    Use a clear container so the learner can observe the roots, soil, and moisture.

  2. Add a drainage layer.

    Place a small layer of pebbles at the bottom. Explain that extra water can collect below the soil instead of flooding the plant’s roots.

  3. Add soil.

    Fill the container about one-third full with potting soil.

  4. Add the plant or seeds.

    Make a small hole, place the seed or plant inside, and gently cover the roots or seed with soil.

  5. Add a small amount of water.

    The soil should be damp but not dripping wet.

  6. Place the ecosystem in light.

    Choose a bright location, but avoid very hot direct sunlight if the container is sealed or made of plastic.

“I notice that the plant has soil, water, and light. It also needs air. I predict that the plant will remain healthy if the soil stays slightly damp and it receives enough light.”

Part 2: We Do — Build the Mini Ecosystem Together

Complete the following steps together:

  1. Examine the materials and decide which ones are living and nonliving.
  2. Choose whether to use a seed, bean, moss, grass, or small plant.
  3. Place rocks, soil, and the plant or seed into the container.
  4. Decorate the outside of the container if desired. Do not cover the plant or block all light.
  5. Add a small amount of water.
  6. Place the container in a safe, bright location.
  7. Create a label with the date, plant type, and prediction.

Think-Pair-Share or Talk-It-Through

If working independently, the learner can explain the answers to an adult or record them in a notebook. If working with another learner, discuss:

  • What might happen if the ecosystem receives no light?
  • What might happen if it receives too much water?
  • How might the soil help the plant?
  • How does the plant affect the air around it?

Part 3: You Do — Scientific Observation Challenge

The learner completes a science journal entry using the following format:

Encourage the learner to observe without disturbing the ecosystem. They may record:

  • Plant height
  • Number of leaves
  • Leaf color
  • Soil moisture

  1. Ecosystem Engineer:

    Design a labeled diagram of an ideal mini ecosystem. Include arrows showing how water, light, air, and soil help the plant.

  2. Plant Reporter:

    Record a one-minute news report explaining what is happening inside the ecosystem.

  3. Science Comic:

    Create a short comic in which a plant explains what it needs to survive.

  4. Fair-Test Planner:

    Design an investigation comparing two plants. For example, place one in bright light and one in a darker location. Predict what will happen and identify what must remain the same.

  • Complete one construction step at a time and check understanding before continuing.
