Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to read and understand basic Spanish texts.

Materials and Prep

  • Spanish reading materials (books, articles, or short stories)
  • Spanish-English dictionary
  • Pen and paper

No prior knowledge of Spanish is required.

Activities

  1. Start by selecting a short Spanish text suitable for beginners. It could be a children's book, a simple article, or a short story. Make sure the text contains familiar vocabulary and basic sentence structures.

  2. Begin reading the text aloud to the student, emphasizing proper pronunciation and intonation. Encourage the student to follow along with their finger or a pencil.

  3. After reading a paragraph or a page, ask the student comprehension questions in English. For example, "What is the main idea of this paragraph?" or "Who is the main character?" This will help them develop their reading comprehension skills.

  4. Have the student read the same paragraph or page out loud, taking turns with you if needed. Provide guidance and correct any pronunciation or grammar errors they may make.

  5. Encourage the student to use a Spanish-English dictionary to look up unfamiliar words. This will help expand their vocabulary and understanding of the text.

  6. Ask the student to summarize what they have read so far, either orally or in writing. This will reinforce their understanding of the text and their ability to express themselves in Spanish.

  7. Continue reading and discussing the text, gradually increasing the difficulty level as the student progresses. Provide support and guidance as needed.

  8. Conclude the lesson by discussing any challenging aspects of the text and addressing any questions or concerns the student may have.
