Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to confidently navigate the 1 to 100 Number Chart, count to 100 by tens, identify numbers up to 100, write numerals, understand place value, order numbers, and determine the numbers that come before and after a given number.

Materials and Prep

  • Computer or tablet with internet access

No prior knowledge or materials are required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Explore the 1 to 100 Number Chart online:
  2. Using a computer or tablet, open an internet browser and search for "1 to 100 Number Chart interactive". Find a suitable website or app that provides an interactive number chart. Encourage the student to explore the chart by clicking on different numbers to see their corresponding numerals.

  3. Counting to 100 by Tens:
  4. Guide the student to count aloud from 10 to 100 by tens. Start with 10, then 20, 30, and so on, until they reach 100. Repeat this exercise multiple times to reinforce the pattern of counting by tens.

  5. Identifying and Writing Numbers:
  6. Show the student various numbers between 1 and 100 and ask them to identify the number. Then, have them practice writing the corresponding numeral on a piece of paper or a virtual whiteboard.

  7. Understanding Place Value:
  8. Explain to the student that each digit in a number has a place value. For example, in the number 25, the 2 represents 20 (tens place) and the 5 represents 5 (ones place). Ask the student to identify the place value of different digits in various numbers.

  9. Ordering Numbers:
  10. Present the student with a set of random numbers between 1 and 100 and ask them to arrange the numbers in ascending order (from smallest to largest) or descending order (from largest to smallest). Provide feedback and guidance as needed.

  11. Before and After:
  12. Give the student a number between 1 and 100 and ask them to determine the number that comes before and after it. For example, if the given number is 42, the student should say 41 and 43, respectively. Practice this skill with multiple numbers to reinforce the concept.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to explore numbers from 1 to 100 and learn some fun activities related to counting, writing numerals, and understanding place value."
  • "We will use an interactive online number chart to help us visualize the numbers and their corresponding numerals."
  • "Let's practice counting to 100 by tens. We will start at 10 and keep adding 10 until we reach 100."
  • "Can you identify the numbers I show you? Great! Now, let's write those numbers as numerals."
  • "Do you know what place value means? It helps us understand the value of each digit in a number. For example, in the number 25, the 2 represents 20 (tens place) and the 5 represents 5 (ones place)."
  • "Let's arrange some numbers in order from smallest to largest or largest to smallest. This will help us practice ordering numbers."
  • "Now, I will give you a number, and I want you to tell me the number that comes before and after it. This will help us understand the concept of 'before' and 'after'."
