Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and solve basic arithmetic problems involving addition and subtraction.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Addition Practice
Write down the following addition problems on a sheet of paper:
- 2 + 3 = ?
- 4 + 1 = ?
- 5 + 2 = ?
Using your pencil, solve each problem by counting the total number of objects. For example, for 2 + 3, draw two circles and three more circles, then count how many circles there are in total. Write down the answers next to each problem.
-
Activity 2: Subtraction Practice
Write down the following subtraction problems on a new sheet of paper:
- 5 - 2 = ?
- 4 - 1 = ?
- 6 - 3 = ?
Using your pencil, solve each problem by crossing out the appropriate number of objects. For example, for 5 - 2, draw five circles and cross out two of them, then count how many circles are left. Write down the answers next to each problem.
Transitional-Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to learn about addition and subtraction."
- "Addition is when we combine two or more numbers to find the total."
- "Subtraction is when we take away one number from another to find the difference."
- "To solve addition problems, we can count the total number of objects."
- "For subtraction problems, we can cross out or take away some objects to find out how many are left."
- "Let's practice addition first. Look at the numbers and draw the objects to help you count and find the answers."
- "Now, let's move on to subtraction. Cross out the objects to help you find the answers."
- "Great job! You have learned how to solve basic addition and subtraction problems."
