Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to confidently add 5 to any number.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper or a whiteboard
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Warm-up: Start by counting from 1 to 10 together. Then, practice counting by 5s up to 50. For example, say 5, 10, 15, 20, and so on.
-
Introduce the concept of adding 5 by using real-life examples. For instance, explain that if you have 3 apples and you add 5 more, you will have a total of 8 apples.
-
Practice adding 5 to different numbers. Write down a number on the paper or whiteboard, and ask the student to add 5 to it. Encourage them to use their fingers or draw dots to help them count.
-
Create a game where the student rolls a dice and adds 5 to the number they rolled. Keep a tally of their correct answers and celebrate their progress.
-
Wrap up the lesson by asking the student to solve a few word problems involving adding 5. For example, "If you have 2 toy cars and your friend gives you 5 more, how many toy cars do you have in total?"
