Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will develop a positive attitude towards reading books and understand the importance of reading for personal growth and enjoyment.

Materials and Prep

  • A selection of books from different genres and topics
  • Paper and pencils
  • Internet access (optional)

Activities

  1. Book Tasting: Set up a book tasting experience where you will introduce the student to a variety of books. Place different books on a table, cover them with fabric or paper, and label each with a number. Allow the student to choose a few books to "taste" by reading the first few pages or chapter. Encourage them to write down their initial thoughts and impressions.
  2. Book Review: After the book tasting, ask the student to select one book they found interesting or enjoyable. Have them read the book or a significant portion of it. Then, ask them to write a short book review highlighting the aspects they liked or disliked about the book. Encourage them to express their opinions and provide reasons for their preferences.
  3. Book Recommendation: In this activity, the student will play the role of a book recommender. Ask them to think about a friend or family member who has similar interests or dislikes as them. Have them write a persuasive letter or email recommending the book they enjoyed from the book tasting. They should explain why they think their friend or family member would enjoy the book and provide specific examples from the story.
  4. Author Interview: Research an author whose books align with the student's interests or hobbies. Find an interview or video where the author discusses their writing process or inspiration. Watch or read it together and then have a discussion about the author's perspective. Encourage the student to ask questions and share their thoughts on the interview.
