Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will develop a greater interest in reading books and understand the importance of reading for enjoyment and learning.

Materials and Prep

  • A selection of age-appropriate books
  • Writing materials (pencil, paper)
  • Timer or stopwatch

Activities

  1. Book Exploration: Allow the student to explore a variety of books from different genres, such as fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and picture books. Encourage them to flip through the pages, look at the illustrations, and read a few sentences or paragraphs. Ask them to choose one book that catches their interest the most.

  2. Reading Buddy: Pair the student with a reading buddy, either a family member or a stuffed animal. Have the student take turns reading aloud to their buddy and encourage them to use different voices for different characters or add sound effects to make it more engaging.

  3. Reading Challenge: Set a timer for 10 minutes and challenge the student to read as much as they can within that time. Make it a friendly competition by participating yourself or involving other family members. After the challenge, discuss the progress made and celebrate their achievements.

  4. Book Review: Ask the student to choose a book they have recently read or the one they found most interesting during the book exploration activity. Have them write a short book review, including their favorite part, characters, and why they would recommend it to others. Encourage creativity and provide assistance if needed.
