Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize and read a set of sight words.
Materials and Prep
- Flashcards or printed sight word cards
- Whiteboard or paper
- Marker or pen
Before starting this lesson, make sure you have a good understanding of phonics and have practiced reading basic words.
Activities
-
Warm-up: Review Phonics
Start by reviewing some phonics sounds you already know. Practice saying the sounds and identifying objects or pictures that start with those sounds.
-
Introduce Sight Words
Show the sight word flashcards or printed cards one by one. Say the word aloud and have the student repeat it. Repeat this process for all the sight words you want to focus on.
-
Play Sight Word Memory Game
Write each sight word on a separate card or piece of paper, making two sets of each word. Shuffle the cards and lay them face down. Take turns flipping two cards at a time, trying to find a match. When a match is found, read the word aloud. Continue until all matches have been found.
-
Create Sight Word Sentences
Write a simple sentence using one of the sight words on the whiteboard or paper. Read the sentence aloud and have the student read it back to you. Encourage them to point to each word as they read. Repeat this process for different sight words.
-
Read Sight Word Books
Choose a few simple books that contain the sight words you have been practicing. Read the books together, taking turns reading sentences or pages. Encourage the student to recognize and read the sight words they have learned.
