Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize and identify different types of animals through reading.
Materials and Prep
- Animal picture books
- Flashcards with animal names
- Paper and crayons
- Scissors
- Tape
Prior to the lesson, familiarize yourself with the animal picture books and cut out the flashcards.
Activities
- Activity 1: Animal Book Hunt
- Activity 2: Animal Flashcards
- Activity 3: Animal Collage
Hide animal picture books around the room. Encourage your child to find and bring back one book at a time. After finding each book, ask your child to describe the animals they see on the cover.
Show your child the animal flashcards one by one. Ask them to name the animal and make the corresponding animal sound. Help them practice reading the animal names on the flashcards.
Give your child a piece of paper and crayons. Ask them to draw their favorite animal and color it. Cut out the animal drawing and help them tape it onto a larger piece of paper to create an animal collage.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- Animals are living creatures. They can be found in different places like zoos, forests, and even our homes.
- Animals come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Some animals have fur, while others have feathers or scales.
- Animals have different names. We can learn their names by reading books and looking at pictures.
- Each animal makes a unique sound. For example, a dog says "woof woof" and a cat says "meow."
- We can draw and color animals to create our own animal artwork.
