Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize and identify different parts of a book, such as the cover, pages, and words.
Materials and Prep
- A variety of age-appropriate books
- Index cards or sticky notes
- Markers or crayons
Activities
-
Book Hunt: Hide different books around the room and encourage your child to find them. Once found, have them identify the different parts of the book, such as the cover, pages, and words. You can use index cards or sticky notes to label these parts for added visual reinforcement.
-
Book Cover Art: Provide your child with a blank piece of paper and ask them to create their own book cover. Encourage them to use their imagination and draw a picture that represents a story they would like to read. Once they are done, have them share their artwork and explain what their book is about.
-
Word Scavenger Hunt: Write down a few simple words on index cards or sticky notes and hide them around the room. Ask your child to find the words and read them out loud. You can start with basic words like "cat," "dog," "sun," etc. This activity will help reinforce word recognition and reading skills.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Books are special because they have different parts, just like our body has different parts. Can you show me where the cover of the book is?"
- "The cover is like the book's face. It protects the pages inside. Can you find the pages of the book? They are like the book's body."
- "Now, let's find the words inside the book. Words are like the book's voice. They tell us the story or give us information. Can you read any words you see?"
- "Wow, you found a book! Can you draw a picture for the cover of your own book? What story do you want to tell with your drawing?"
- "Let's go on a word scavenger hunt! Can you find the words I hid around the room? When you find them, read them out loud. Great job!"
