By the end of this lesson, you will be able to improve your reading comprehension skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Reading materials (books, articles, or short stories)
  • Paper and pen

Activities

  1. Choose a reading material that interests you. It can be a book, an article, or a short story. Make sure it is at an appropriate reading level for ninth grade.

  2. Before you start reading, take a few minutes to preview the text. Look at the title, headings, and any accompanying images or illustrations. This will give you an idea of what to expect and activate your prior knowledge.

  3. As you read, make annotations or take notes on important points, unfamiliar vocabulary, or any questions that arise. This will help you stay engaged and retain information.

  4. After finishing the reading, reflect on what you have learned. Write a short summary or create a mind map to organize your thoughts. Think about the main idea, supporting details, and any connections you can make to your own life or other texts you have read.

  5. Finally, discuss your reading experience with a parent or guardian. Share your thoughts, ask questions, and engage in a conversation about the text. This will further enhance your comprehension and critical thinking skills.
