Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the concept of light, prisms, and the color spectrum.
Materials and Prep
- A flashlight
- A glass prism
- A blank white wall or surface
- A piece of paper
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Exploring Light
Turn off the lights in the room and close the curtains to make it as dark as possible. Take the flashlight and shine it on the blank white wall. Observe the light beam and discuss what you notice about it.
-
Activity 2: Introduction to Prisms
Hold the glass prism in front of the flashlight beam and observe what happens. Notice the different colors that appear on the wall. Discuss why this happens and how the prism is responsible for separating the colors of light.
-
Activity 3: Creating a Color Spectrum
Take the piece of paper and draw a straight line on it. Place the prism on the line, with the light beam passing through it. Observe the colors that appear on the paper and discuss how they form a color spectrum.
