Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize and identify basic sight words and understand how to read simple sentences.

Materials and Prep

  • Whiteboard or chalkboard
  • Dry erase markers or chalk
  • Index cards with sight words (e.g., "the", "and", "is", "it", etc.)
  • Simple picture books with short sentences

Activities

  1. Introduction to Sight Words:

Write a few sight words on the whiteboard or chalkboard. Explain that these are words that we see very often in books and that it's important to recognize them quickly when reading.

  2. Sight Word Memory Game:

Place the index cards with sight words face down on a table. Take turns flipping two cards at a time, trying to find matching pairs. When a pair is found, read the word aloud. Continue until all pairs are matched.

  3. Reading Simple Sentences:

Choose a picture book with short sentences and clear illustrations. Read the sentences out loud, pointing to each word as you read. Then, ask the student to try reading the sentences on their own, using the pictures as clues.

  4. Create Your Own Sentence:

Give the student a blank index card and encourage them to write or draw a simple sentence using one of the sight words they learned. Help them sound out the words if needed. Once they are done, have them read their sentence aloud.

  5. Word Hunt:

Choose a word from the picture book and write it on the whiteboard or chalkboard. Ask the student to find that word in the book and point to it. Repeat with different words from the book.
