Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and identify basic sight words and understand their meaning.
Materials and Prep
- Flashcards with sight words (e.g., "the," "and," "is," "it," etc.)
- Whiteboard or large paper
- Dry erase markers or markers
Activities
-
Introduction: Begin by showing the flashcards with sight words to the student. Say each word out loud and ask the student to repeat after you. Repeat this a few times to familiarize the student with the words.
-
Matching Game: Write the sight words randomly on the whiteboard or large paper. Give the flashcards to the student and ask them to match each flashcard with the corresponding word on the board. Encourage them to say the word out loud as they make the match.
-
Word Hunt: Hide the flashcards around the room or in a designated area. Ask the student to find the flashcards and read the words aloud as they find them. This activity helps reinforce word recognition and reading skills.
-
Story Time: Choose a simple picture book or a short story with repetitive words. Read the story aloud to the student, pointing to each word as you read. After reading, ask the student to identify the sight words they have learned from the story.
