Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and locate all 50 states on a map of the United States.
Materials and Prep
- Printed map of the United States
- Colored pencils or markers
- Index cards or small pieces of paper
- Scissors
- Tape
Before starting the lesson, make sure the student is familiar with the concept of states and their locations within a country.
Activities
- Create a State Puzzle: Cut out the printed map of the United States into individual state pieces. Mix up the pieces and have the student put the puzzle back together.
- Coloring Challenge: Give the student a blank map of the United States and have them color each state with a different color. This will help them visualize the different shapes and sizes of the states.
- State Identification Game: Write the names of the states on index cards or small pieces of paper. Shuffle the cards and place them face down. Take turns picking a card and identifying the state on the map.
- State Capitals Match: Write the names of the state capitals on index cards or small pieces of paper. Shuffle the cards and place them face down. Take turns picking a card and matching it with the correct state on the map.
- Create a State Fact Book: Have the student research one state of their choice and write down interesting facts about that state. They can include information about the state's capital, population, famous landmarks, or anything else they find interesting.
