Materials and Prep

• A novel of your choice
• A notebook or paper for taking notes
• Pen or pencil

Activities

• Read the first chapter of the novel. Take notes on the main characters, setting, and any important events or details.

• After reading, create a character chart. Write down the names of the main characters and their traits, motivations, and relationships with other characters.

• Choose a scene from the chapter and rewrite it from a different character's perspective. How would their thoughts and feelings differ from the original narrator?

• Write a short summary of the chapter, highlighting the main events and themes.

• Discuss your thoughts and impressions of the chapter with a family member or friend. What stood out to you the most? Were there any surprises or unanswered questions?

• Character Development: Characters are the heart of a story. How do the characters in the novel you're reading change and grow over time? Can you relate to any of the characters or their experiences?

• Themes: Themes are the underlying messages or ideas in a story. What themes do you think the author is exploring in this novel? How do these themes relate to your own life or experiences?
