Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and read basic sight words.
Materials and Prep
- Flashcards with sight words (e.g., "cat," "dog," "go," "see," "the")
- A whiteboard or a piece of paper and markers
- A storybook with simple sentences
Activities
- 1. Sight Word Flashcards: Show the student flashcards with sight words and ask them to say the word out loud. Repeat this activity until the student feels comfortable recognizing and saying the words.
- 2. Word Hunt: Write the sight words on the whiteboard or paper. Give the student a pointer or their finger and ask them to find and point to the corresponding word in the storybook. Encourage them to read the word aloud when they find it.
- 3. Storytime: Read a simple storybook with short sentences to the student. Pause at sight words and ask the student to read them out loud. Encourage them to use their finger to point to the words as they read.
- 4. Word Building: Write the sight words on separate pieces of paper or index cards. Mix up the letters and ask the student to rearrange them to form the correct word. Repeat this activity with different sight words.
Talking Points
- Flashcards: "Let's look at these special cards with words on them. Can you say the word when I show you a card? Great job!"
- Word Hunt: "Now, we are going to find some special words in our storybook. Can you use your finger to point to the word 'cat'? Excellent!"
- Storytime: "Listen carefully to this story. When we see a special word, let's read it together. Ready?"
- Word Building: "We are going to play with letters now. I have some jumbled up letters. Can you help me put them in the right order to make a word? You're doing fantastic!"
