Objective

By the end of this lesson, Amy will be able to recognize different coins, understand their values, and confidently count money using various combinations of coins.

Materials and Prep

  • Different coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters) - you can use real coins or draw them on paper.
  • A piece of paper and a pencil for note-taking.
  • A small container or jar to hold the coins during activities.
  • Knowledge of the values of each coin: penny (1 cent), nickel (5 cents), dime (10 cents), quarter (25 cents).

Activities

  • Coin Identification Game:

Start by showing Amy each type of coin. Ask her to name them and say their values. You can play a game where you mix up the coins, and she has to identify and sort them correctly.

  • Counting Coins Challenge:

Give Amy a set of coins and challenge her to count the total value. You can start with simple combinations and gradually increase the complexity as she becomes more confident.

  • Make a Store:

Create a pretend store at home where Amy can "buy" items using the coins. You can price items with different values, and she can practice counting out the correct amount of money to pay for them.

  • Coin Art:

Have Amy create art using the coins. She can arrange them into shapes or patterns and then count how many of each type she used in her artwork.

Talking Points

  • "What do you notice about the different coins? Each one has a special value!"
  • "Can you tell me how much a penny is worth? That's right, it's 1 cent!"
  • "If you have 5 pennies, how much money do you have in total?"
  • "Great job! Now, what happens if we add a nickel to that? How much do we have now?"
  • "Let’s play a game! Can you find all the quarters in this jar? Remember, each quarter is worth 25 cents!"
  • "When we count coins, it's like solving a puzzle. Can you figure out how to make 50 cents using different coins?"
  • "What if I want to buy something that costs 30 cents? How can you help me find that amount using the coins?"
  • "Isn't it fun to create a store? What items do you want to sell, and how much will they cost?"
  • "Art with coins is cool! How many coins did you use in your artwork? Can you count them?"
  • "Remember, practice makes perfect! The more you count, the easier it will be!"
