Objective

By the end of this lesson, David will be able to understand what fossils are, how they are formed, and identify some common types of fossils. He will also engage in fun activities that help reinforce his learning about these ancient treasures!

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Playdough or clay
  • Small toys or objects (like dinosaurs, shells, or leaves)
  • Space to play and create

Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials. It can be helpful to have a comfortable space for David to sit and work on his activities.

Activities

  • Fossil Drawing:

David can draw pictures of different fossils he might find, like dinosaur bones or leaf prints. Encourage him to use his imagination and colors!

  • Playdough Fossils:

Using playdough or clay, David can press small toys or objects into the dough to make fossil imprints. After making the imprints, he can pretend to be a paleontologist discovering fossils!

  • Fossil Hunt:

Hide small toys or objects around the room or yard and have David go on a "fossil hunt" to find them. Each time he finds one, he can talk about what kind of fossil it might be.

Talking Points

  • "Fossils are like nature's treasure! They tell us about plants and animals that lived a long, long time ago!"
  • "Did you know that fossils can be bones, shells, or even footprints? They help us learn about dinosaurs!"
  • "When a plant or animal dies, sometimes it gets buried under dirt. Over time, it can turn into a fossil!"
  • "Let’s pretend we are paleontologists! What kind of fossils do you think we will find?"
